PROJECTS - QUALITY ALL THE TIME AND CLASS AT EVERY STEP

NEXTERA ENERGY Project Overview:
Project Recap: Davenport TPL Supports NextEra Energy with Methane Venting Valves Earlier this year, Davenport TPL successfully completed the delivery and integration of two critical methane venting valves for NextEra Energy’s Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) and Coal Mine Methane (CMM) operations in Virginia. The project was focused on ensuring safe and reliable venting of methane to the atmosphere in a fully automated and fail-safe manner. The request from NextEra Energy was clear and safety-driven: two valves were needed for a straightforward but essential automatic venting application, where fail-open functionality was mandatory. In the event of a system failure or power outage, the valves needed to remain in the open position, allowing uninterrupted methane release to atmosphere, avoiding buildup and potential hazard. Davenport TPL worked closely with NextEra's engineering team to select the appropriate API 6D-compliant valves, designed with flanged ends to allow flexibility in connection (RFFE or RTJ). The body construction was carbon steel, while internals were specified in stainless steel to ensure long-term durability and corrosion resistance in field conditions. In alignment with the hazardous environment classification of Class I, Division 2, the project team offered a choice between electric and pneumatic actuation, both suited for safe area compliance. Electric actuators were ultimately selected, with compatibility for 24VDC or 120VAC power input. Each actuator featured ISO 5211 mounting, a self-locking worm drive for smooth and reliable torque transmission, and manual override capability—a critical feature for field accessibility during outages. To meet operational visibility requirements, limit switches with local indication were integrated to show valve position (open/closed) at a glance. Before shipment, Davenport TPL ensured that all valve openings were sealed with protective covers to prevent contamination or damage in transit. The valves were shipped fully assembled and ready for installation. The valves were delivered on time, installed with no complications, and brought online without disruption to ongoing operations. The solution helped strengthen NextEra’s safety protocols for methane handling—particularly in RNG and CMM environments—while offering reliable, passive failover functionality. This project exemplified Davenport TPL’s ability to move quickly, align with strict technical and safety requirements, and deliver solutions that meet the demands of evolving energy operations.
